There weren’t many bad things to say about the free kick system in FIFA 12, it offered a variety of choices of where and how to shoot, pass or even lay the ball off if one of your teammates fancied a ‘Release the Kraken!’ long shot. So why fix something that isn’t broken? Well, EA SPORTS aim to take set-piece realism to the next level.
There will be an option to have a third kicker, he can run over the ball and become a passing option, giving the defenders and goalkeeper a hard time trying to read exactly what you’re doing and where the ball’s going. You will now also have the ability to reform the wall after they’ve jumped and can then use them to jump again. Another new feature is the option to add or subtract players to and from the wall.
In FIFA 13 we will see a completely new way in how the referees operate, helping them to understand situations more than ever before and therefore witness better and more realistic foul and card decisions. This ties into another feature when defending with the wall during free kicks, you now have the option to ‘creep the wall’ (this is basically just edging the wall forward slightly), be careful with this though, because depending on the referee's strictness, he can and will book you if you overstep the mark! A lenient ref will just set the wall back to where he deems appropriate, but a stricter ref will choose a player who isn’t booked and show them the yellow card. However if by some unfortunate instance all of your wall is on a booking, one of your players could well be heading for an early bath.
Now for a brief breakdown of this new feature:
- Third kicker
- More options
- More creativity
- Wall can jump, reform and jump again
- Improved referee intelligence
- Creeping the wall
- Cat and mouse free kicks
